Marymoor Park has added a MOMentum gym which is fitness equipment you can use while your kids play at the playground. What a great idea to get parents fit!
I first got the “head’s up” that this was coming through Kellee over at EveryMove. EveryMove’s health and fitness blog is worth checking out – especially if you live in the Pacific Northwest.
Here’s pictures and a list of the pros and cons of the different pieces of equipment at the park.
Pros:
- Equipment looks sleek and new
- A station for abdominal crunches and ‘V’ sits
- Two roman chairs to perform ab knee ups and tricep dips
- A pull up bar for back and hanging knee raises
- Equipment was almost always in use on Saturday night with smiling faces
Cons:
- *Gliders (no resistance)
- **Standing rotation station (no resistance)
- Little kids on gliders and rotational equipment
*The gliders are suppose to be for low impact cardiovascular training. With no resistance, it would be similar to pedaling down a steep hill as fast as you can. You will burn more calories walking around the playground or even marching in place than you would on these gliders. I wish they could have figured out a way to add even light resistance to this piece of equipment – then I would have told you this thing is amazing.
**The rotation station also had no resistance. It’s a waste of your time and it will NOT strengthen your core. It is more challenging to stand in place and rotate your upper body with your feet stationary. It may even increase your risk of injury if you aren’t careful.
Summary:
The fixed machines are great. There is nothing cutting edge here, it’s old school exercises that do work if you know what you are doing.
The machines that used momentum are fun to try, but will not get you fit.
Adult playgrounds and outdoor gyms are popping up all over the country. Check out Bendiful Blog‘s post and Life Trail – you may have one in your neighborhood too!
Love those gliders. Get me one!
What a great idea. I haven’t seen this around here, but I’m not frequenting playgrounds at this point of my life either. Perhaps when I have grandkids?
Yes, my parents go with me all the time. 🙂
WOW I love those gliders, I wish mine had that! Thank you so much for the link in your blog! I hope to see more of these play areas it really is a great way to workout as a mom!
Here’s your comment – I guess I just had to approve it. 🙂
I have no idea where my first comment went but I love those gliders! I wish my area had them I would never leave them. Thank you so much for the link! Much Appreciated! It’s interesting how different they can all be!
Thanks for posting about this park. I heard about it the other day, and was curious. Appreciate your feedback on the benefits (and non-benefits)—so good to know!
Marymoor is fun to go to anyway – go check it out!
I’m going to ask my city if there are any parks in my area with that kind of stuff.
You should. You may want to go to the city’s website – it might direct you to any in your area.
Super cool! It takes a bit of work to start one in your community but the hard work is worth it:
Is this video of one you have in your area? Have u tried it? I would love to get the ball rolling for one like that in our area.
Now I am jealous of you! You’re so lucky to have something like this near home. Kids can play and the parents get a workout – no way to say there is no time for exercise.
Yay! I wanted to get to Marymoor myself to check it out, but hadn’t been able to schedule a good day/time for a West Seattle to Redmond commute. Bummer about the resistance on the gliders and the rotation stations. It’s such a great idea, though!
Yes, I still love the fact that they are there!
That’s pretty sweet actually! I’ve never seen anything like that! I mean, at an old park I would go to has a child, there was a circuit of exercises built, but it was old wooded stuff, that nobody uses today anymore! I wish a park near me had that!
