Train for Summer Fun!

What do you like to do during the summer months?  Hike?  Golf?  Kayak?  Have you done any of these activities since last summer?

This may not look hard to you, but to kayak in the Puget Sound is pretty brave if you are just trying this for the first time.

Your body is asking for injuries if you aren’t prepared.  It is important to build a base level of strength.  Also, adding in a few functional core exercises will help get you ready for fun!

*Try these two exercises today:

Dumbbell Staggered Squat to Airplane

1.  Stand with your feet shoulder width apart with a light dumbbell in your right hand.

2.  Step forward with your left foot (to 10 o’clock) and squat down with your hips back.

3.  Lift arms out to side and extend your right leg back – like an airplane.  Pinch your shoulder blades together and lengthen through your neck.

4.  Squat back down, keeping your back straight and transfer dumbbell to your left hand.

5.  Airplane with dumbbell in your left hand.

6.  Staggered squat back down again, dumbbell reaching towards left foot.

7.  Push off your left foot back to standing, with your feet shoulder width.

To make this exercise more challenging, add in trunk rotation as you lift into airplane.


Dumbbell V Sit with Rotation

1. V sit with your abs in, chest lifted, and press your heels into grass.

2.  Rotate to your side, keeping your chest lifted and knees pointing up.

3.  Transfer weight to other hand and repeat.

Make this exercise more difficult by adding both legs up off the ground.

You have about 6 weeks until summer.  Get stronger now, so you can enjoy your  summer activities!
