Oh, My Aching Back!


Most of us will experience back pain at one point or another in our lives. Activities that are too strenuous and even sedentary activities can cause back spasms.

The keys to preventing back pain are simply good posture and regular exercise.

Good posture keeps body aligned, relieving muscles of unnecessary stress and strain.  It is also important to have a strong core (all muscles between shoulders and hips).

Your doctor may have you make changes in your daily routine while you are experiencing severe pain.  Avoid heavy lifting, twisting, bending, or even sitting for long periods of time.

You and your doctor should discuss a plan to gradually return to your normal routine.  This should include an exercise program to keep your back healthy and mobile.

Seek out a qualified physical therapist and fitness trainer to guide you in your rehabilitation.  I cannot stress this enough.  The longer you resist therapy, the longer it can take to recover.

It is important to start slowly.  Gradually increase your exercise intensity and duration while focusing on your form.
